NIELS SHOE MEULMAN

Amsterdam

To anybody familiar the early european graffiti-scene, the name Shoe retains legendary status. Putting Amsterdam on the map during those initial years, he was an embassador for the ethics of innovation and diversity that made this city a rallying point for anybody truly devoted to style. Feeling maybe that he had proved to the scene and to himself all that he had wished for, Meulman became apprentice to Dutch graphic design master Anthon Beeke. Throughout the nineties Meulman ran his own design studio Caulfield & Tensing, before joining FHV/BBDO as senior art director. Moving later into formal typography, graphic design and global brand communication, he even developed recently a fashion design line for the British sports brand Umbro, including a signature shoe. His designs and artwork are part of the permanent collection of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Currently Meulman is running his company Unruly, a flexible outfit for creative direction that specializes in typographic design.
